THE SANCTITY OF HUMAN LIFE

The first part of Genesis 1:27 states

“So God created man in His own image;”

This scripture is so important because it states that the idea to create human beings was God’s. We were designed with his likeness, glory, image and beauty in mind. We were created with His characteristics. We are not a higher form of another species. We are not just a little bit better than animals. Time and history has revealed the incredible gifts and abilities that human beings have.

Genesis 2:7 says
“And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.”

From the beginning of creation, the Bible states that man was created by God. The Lord takes full credit for the creation of man. We were intricately formed for the purpose of bringing God glory.

Jeremiah 1:5 says

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.”

This scripture is of the utmost importance because it lets us know that human beings are not an afterthought in the eyes of God. No matter which man and woman were the designated parents of a child, that child was predestined in the mind of God. This is why most Christians are pro-life and not pro-abortion. No matter how a child was conceived, the Lord loves and has a plan for every child.

Proverbs 6:16-17 states

“These six things the Lord hates…. Hands that shed innocent blood.”

According to the Bible, any and all forms of murder grieve the heart of God, including suicide, homicide, genocide and infanticide (abortion). The reason why is because Deuteronomy 30:19 tells us that the Lord wants us to choose life and not death. He is not pleased with any form of death. Death is a constant reminder of the sin that haunts this world everyday.

Leviticus 24:17 further supports this theory of the sanctity of life. It states “Whoever kills any man shall surely be put to death.” This is why, to this day, murder is punishable by imprisonment and, sometimes, the death penalty. Life is a very precious gift from God and He does not play around with it.

Deuteronomy 32:39 states

“See now that I, even I, am he, And there is no god with me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal: Neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand.”

The power of life and death ultimately belongs to the Lord. Although those who are in authority have been given the power to jail, imprison, and execute human beings, that power ultimately belongs to the Lord. That is why Romans 12 states that vengeance belongs to God and He will repay. God ultimately holds the power to end life and to resurrect life also.
